Intermittent fasting…have you heard of it??  This ancient practice is gaining a lot of attention lately and CrossFit even recently shared this article, Fasting Diets Are Gaining Acceptance, from the NY Times.

Through research it’s pretty clear that our ancestors didn’t eat 3 rounded meals a day + snacks from sun up to sun down.  Hunter-gatherers and even closer ancestors commonly had sporadic food supply, therefore were intermittently fasting without meaning to.

Intermittent fasting has been shown to lower insulin levels and resulted in a reduction of disease risk factors.  It has also been shown to aid in weight loss, lower LDL levels, blood pressure and triglycerides.  Research shows intermittent fasting has also helped those participating to shed fat, retain more lean muscle mass, as well as gain more lean muscle mass!

Flexible dieting and intermittent fasting go hand in hand.  You can be flexible about what you eat, while still losing weight and gaining lean muscle mass.  It’s not necessary to be as strict about calories, carbs, fat, etc on days when you’re not fasting!
