Meet our July 2016 Athlete of the Month – Joey White!!

joey2

Joey will be celebrating his 3 year anniversary with CFP next month & will be turning the big 5-0 in October!!  Joey adds so much to our community, coming in each day with a smile & a good word!  While he still has his laundry list of CrossFit goals to achieve (who doesn’t!?), Joey continues to get stronger & more fit with each passing year!

Joey works for Samaritan’s Purse and has been fortunate to travel all over!  He truly sees the benefit in being healthy and using his fitness.  He recently participated in our Summer Shake Down Challenge & took 2nd place!!  He lost a whopping 14lbs, increased his 5 rep max back squat, pull-up capacity & overall aerobic capacity with a 3 min burpee challenge, all in 30 days time!  Age, busy schedule, travel…Joey has no excuses!!

We’re so proud of you Joey & all your hard work!  We’re even more thankful to have you apart of our community!

Joey’s Athlete Profile

1. Tell us about yourself in a few sentences.  I grew up on a farm in rural Alabama, but moved to the big city of Monroe, North Carolina during high school and will always call the Charlotte Area home.  I graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill and am a huge Tarheel fan, but hopefully not one of the obnoxious ones.  I’m somewhat of a nerd with a Chemistry degree, but since I haven’t worked in that field for a while, I may have a lost a little of my nerdyness.  For the last 16 years I’ve been on staff with Samaritan’s Purse, focusing on operations, logistics and events for the Operation Christmas Child project.  I’ve been fortunate to travel all over the US and the world with the ministry and have had some incredible experiences, but there are so many places that I still look forward to visiting.  If I have a free weekend, you will find me at the beach.
2. What do you hope to achieve through CrossFit?  This is really a loaded question as there is a lot that I want to achieve, but I really just want to be healthy and fit.  I started CrossFit with some shoulder issues due to playing competitive volleyball, including college, for some 30 years and have since had surgery to repair some of these issues.  CFP and its’ coaches have given me the tools and motivation to gain flexibility, mobility and strength that I thought would not be possible.  I’m dying to get double-unders, handstand walks, and muscle ups in particular, but I need to put in the work to make these happen.

3. What is your favorite CF exercise?  Strict pull-up without a doubt! I’m hoping that as I get more mobility, other types of pull-ups will fall into this category too.

4. What CF exercise do you least like?
I can’t really narrow it down to one.  Other than double-unders, I guess I’d have to say the snatch and overhead squats.  I hate them because I can’t do them well.  I’d rather see wallballs and burpees than these 2.

5. What would you tell someone considering trying CFP?  Just give it a try!!  Don’t be intimidated.  I’ve been doing CrossFit for a couple of years and am still learning some of the movements and terminology, but the coaches are great about explaining everything.    If you put the work in, you will see results.   With traveling a lot, I’ve dropped in a decent amount of boxes, and CFP is different than a lot of the others.  The coaches are engaged and actually coach.  They are deliberate about providing scaled options as needed, but at the same time find a great balance of challenging you also.  It’s not easy, but it’s worth it.  The CFP community is pretty awesome too!
Keep up the great work Joey, the best is yet to come!
