“A good coach will give you the skills and training you need to beat yourself time and time again.”

Tabata Times shared another great article, What Makes a CrossFit Coach Great?, by local CrossFit Coach Justin Johnson from CrossFit LKN.  Coaching can be a grind at times, so articles like this are great for coaches to be reminded of what it really takes, and for athletes to be informed on what they should be looking for in a quality coach!

We definitely strive to embody these qualities as coaches at CFP!  Please always feel free to give us feedback as coaches, after all, it’s what you’re paying for at a CrossFit gym!  And if you have questions, always ask!  🙂  Here’s some great takeaways from the article…

What Makes a CrossFit Coach Great? Takeaways

  • Great coaches focus on foundations – teaching proper progressions for movements; teaching movement standards; proper form over speed and weight – every. time; and how each athlete can appropriately scale!
  • Great coaches focus on the majority & quality programming – “You should strive to create programming that will allow you to push your top 10% to get even better, push your bottom 10% to catch up to the majority, and push the majority into the top 10%.”  Programming should be part of a larger plan (not random), push athletes out of their comfort zone, & be performed safely.
  • Great coaches focus on humility & the relationship – genuinely celebrating PRs with their athletes; getting to know their athletes – goals, prior injuries, weaknesses, etc; and taking them through workouts accordingly.

Again, our goal at CFP is to embody all of these great coaching characteristics!  However, each of us is human and different coaches will excel in different aspects of coaching.  Hopefully, you learn from each of us & take something away from each class!

We’re thankful for our athletes!  You’re why we do what we do.  Keep it up!
